Research Administration - Advantages

Kuali Coeus Research Administration Advantages

The Kuali Coeus (KC) system, our new system for research and grant management, will affect the university in a tremendously positive way. The objective of this project is to streamline and convert the current paper based grant proposal submission process into an electronic process at the UA.  Having a good system for development and management of proposals will contribute to the University's success in gaining research awards within an increasingly competitive arena, as well as, protecting the institutional integrity and future eligibility for awards.

Advantages:

  • Data is stored centrally and in "real time": You can change something at your desk and someone across campus can see that change immediately. Can repurpose/copy an existing proposal
  • Point-and-click interface: No memorizing keystrokes or ugly white-on-black mainframe screens here. Reduces errors and data entry time
  • Web-based, platform-independent software: You don't need anything special to run Coeus besides a simple download, and Coeus will run the same on any computer with an Internet connection. That includes PC's and Macs, Linux, and any Web browser (such as Firefox, Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera, Safari, etc). As long as there is an internet connection, a PI can access the application from anywhere in the world and submit
  • Links to other UA data: Makes more data readily available for you to use in a budget.
  • Performs budget calculations for you: From applying F&A (indirect costs), inflation and fringe rates, to distributing a first-period budget across all remaining periods, you can afford to focus on the budget itself and not all the calculations. Once a detailed budget is entered for year 01, Coeus can calculate the outlying years' budgets, whether modular or detailed.
  • Reduction of errors and improved internal controls: Due to the use of internal business rules in Coeus, electronic errors and warnings are reduced at submission, internal controls are improved, and internal reviews are based on consistent information.
